2015 Conference of the System Dynamics Society 23.07.2015 Rene Reiter

The annual System Dynamics conference brings together people from around the world to share important research and application results and to build the community of those active in the field. The 2015 conference theme is “Reinventing Life on a Shrinking Earth.” While Earth has not changed size in absolute terms, it is shrinking with respect to the activity it supports. Complex business and societal challenges have arisen from the increasing activity on the globe that conventional institutional designs have failed to address. System Dynamics uniquely provides a strategic framework to explore the challenges of a shrinking Earth, giving a greater understanding and exposing counter-intuitive insights that allow us to reinvent our institutions and our lives. The program includes plenary presentations that showcase important work in the field, parallel and poster sessions that present the most current research and applications, and a full day of skill-building workshops covering topics from basic software use to advanced analysis techniques.

GE Manufacturing Plant Uses AnyLogic for Real Time Decision Support 03.04.2015 Rene Reiter

“This is how GE does ‘startups’ – putting our researchers, manufacturing talent and commercial teams to work to create technology that serves customer needs around the world,” Immelt (CEO) said. “GE Energy Storage was born in New York’s Capital Region from an idea that we turned into an advanced manufacturing plant and a global business that we expect will generate more than $1 billion in revenue annually in just a few years.” (www.ecomagination.com, 2012) In 2012, GE opened a new battery manufacturing plant in conjunction with the launch of an innovative energy storage business. The new Durathon battery products, which are half the size of conventional lead acid batteries, but last ten times longer, are the result of GE’s $100 million initial investment in battery technology developed at GE’s Global Research Center (geenergystorage.com, 2014). Expanding the facility doubled production, added 100 new jobs, and brought the total factory workforce to 450 when at full capacity (geenergystorage.com, 2014).

Customer-Centric Transportation Network Modeling 20.02.2015 Rene Reiter

The sphere of public transportation services in Australia is undergoing a transformation in response to a number of drivers, such as a need for inter-modal integration and widespread introduction of consumer information technologies. However, in order to better address new challenges associated with these changes one must first develop an understanding of the dynamic relationships between the way public transportation system operates and the many ways in which people use it to achieve desired mobility. The public transportation company employed PwC to develop a solution for better decision-making and problem-solving. A model was built using AnyLogic 7 as a platform to unify and animate various static data into a dynamic system of interactions. The model is based on three sources of information: network structure provided in GIS format, service timetable in tabular form and ticket sales information gathered from a variety of systems. [...]

Why Grow Your Modeling and Simulation Tool Box? 24.07.2014 Rene Reiter

Solving every problem is made easier with multiple tools. The AnyLogic modeling and simulation environment gives you multiple modeling languages, for better, more profitable decision making, but which is the best for your individual needs? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Utilizing AnyLogic to solve your complex business problems, will give you a number of tools, combination of tools, and the guidance to choose wisely. Real world problems rarely conform to one modeling language. Continuing to develop models with one methodology, or using software that only supports one method will limit the breadth and depth of your projects and cause unneeded complications. In these cases, a modeler will have to introduce workarounds, and unnatural elements like variables, blocks, and states, making the development process more problematic. This also makes understanding the model structure more difficult for other developers (and even yourself), increasing the unlikeliness that the model’s parts would be reused.
